Where the archived documents live, when not in <root>/blobs: the bulk of a
corpus, on a large external drive, beside a database on the fast internal disk.
This directory must exist — it is never created, so an unplugged drive's mount
path does not turn into a folder on the internal disk. A blank path is refused.
